Meeting of the EU Contact Comitee

On October 16 and 17, 2024, representatives of the State Audit Office participated in the annual meeting of the Contact Committee of the European Union, held in Paphos, Cyprus. 
On the first day, a meeting of the heads of the supreme audit institutions of the EU member states and the European Court of Auditors was held on the topic "EU migration policy: lessons learned from the past and expectations from the new Pact on Migration and Asylum" and a panel discussion with representatives of key Cypriot and international institutions responsible for migration questions.
 The discussion covered areas such as trends, challenges and opportunities related to EU migration policy, implementation of migration policy at national levels, the connection of migration with Agenda 2023 for Sustainable Development, the importance of solidarity and the disproportionate burden of southern European countries, accommodation and security of migrants, management of irregular migration, goals of national policies and funds for their implementation, social integration of migrants and others. The second part discussed the possible role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) and the ways in which they can contribute to migration through conducting audits, what are the most critical aspects and how SAIs can add value to the formulation and effectiveness of the implementation of the EU's migration policy. 
On the second day of the meeting, presentations of audits related to migration issues of individual countries were held, the experience of SAI of Germany and SAI of Austria in auditing deficiencies in the control framework of the European Investment Bank was presented, and a short presentation of the conclusions of the conference on the independence of SAIs was presented. 
After the summary and conclusions of the meeting, Tony Murphy, President of the European Court of Auditors and Noel Camilleri, Deputy Auditor General of Malta, took over the chairmanship of the Contact Committee from the SAI of Cyprus, as hosts of the next meeting to be held in November 2025 in Malta.
